Lookbook: Mastering The Art Of Layering.

Dearest Readers,

I need a slap on the wrist by you all for lacking in my consistency with posting! Who wants to volunteer for this?

Anyways! Now that I am here, I have come to you with a brand new Lookbook!

Lookbooks are one of my most favorite posts to blog. Not only because it is something I have always wanted to do since binging on Lookbooks on Youtube since ’07 but because my sense of style is an extension of who I am. It is a form of my identity & I want a place for that on my platform.

For those who enjoy the process of getting dressed, the art of layering is something of a creative outlet, not to mention a canny way to rethink pieces already hanging in your wardrobe.

Layering my outfits is my most favourite thing to do especially during the winter. In fact I was layering my slip dresses all throughout summer so I lied, it is great throughout the whole year!

Of course, it isn’t just about piling on a bunch of clothes and hoping it works. There’s an art to it.

So today I have come to teach you the most important fashion lesson – mastering the art of layering!

For me my love of layering started back in the 90’s when I was obsessed with everything Clueless! This was when I was in primary school and I soon after forgot the trend when I start jumping on the new trends of the 2000s.

Layering is truly timeless and since my love for it has grown massively over the last year I can tell you I will be carrying this trend with me to my 80s!

So lets get the ball rolling…

The first trick to the trade is to avoid bulkiness especially when in a dress!

Make sure your bottom layer is a snug and tight fit and of a lightweight material. This way the top layer will fall over the bottom layer like a second skin. I like to wear turtle necks, shirts, lace tops, net tops, midi tops etc etc etc – my favourite however is a cheeky turtle neck.

Copy of ansty book farm-1I work in an office & have always struggled with finding the right length trousers. I am short as it is so a lot of trousers are long for me. I have a small waist but I carry thunder thighs so I always have to buy trousers one size bigger then my actual frame. Same goes for jeans! It is really the bane to my life! Moving forward – the trick to layering with trousers if you’re short LIKE ME is to wear high waisted ones. This gives off the image of longer legs! It took me a while to learn this lesson but I got there in the end! If you aren’t a fan of high waisted trousers then belt your trousers high to give off the same illusion!

This one is my favourite! You’ll catch me in a skirt any day of the week and my midi skirts are my ultimate favs. You can dress them up and you can dress them down. Figuring out which top to wear with your midi skirt is usually the hardest part of putting the outfit together. The trick here is to tuck in your top into the skirt so that you there is some waist on show and you don’t just look like human wearing a sack of potatoes. I do this with both mini & midi skirts as this flatters the shape of my body.

Pairing my skirt with ankle boots with a small heel accentuates my height and although some say it makes your legs look shorter it actually makes my entire frame look longer so wear what works for you! I feel my legs look short and I look frumpy when I pair my midi skirts with flats especially those with an ankle strap.

I have so many slip dresses in my cupboard that have gathered dust over the years as I’ve struggled to figure out how to wear them modestly as showing my back my neck and my arms is something that is against my faith. Layering has solved all of those problems! The trick her is to keep one layer printed/bright. I like to mix and match with this – sometimes my first layer will be a block colour and I will layer with a printed or textured top or alternatively I will wear a fancy and bright first layer and the second would be a simple layer. For me, this achieves the cool, 90’s laid back but effortless look you’ll find Monica, Rachel & Phoebe rocking in Friends!

I hope this post inspires you to mix and match some of your most neglected pieces of clothes in your cupboard!

Let me know which is your favourite outfit in the comments!!

Love always,

  1. I love all of your cute layered looks. They’re absolutely adorable! Although it’s hard to choose just one fabulous look, your yellow dress with black tights is my favorite. Right now I’m wearing three layers here at home. I’m not a huge lover of cold-weather months – I can hardly wait for spring and summer weather to arrive! Happy holidays to you and your family!

  2. I think just about everything I buy and wear is with layering in mind. Not just because I am always cold, but because some tops I love but fit short or can be too revealing in light fabric

  3. I love to layer as well, especially during winter when it is so cold! I like mini skirts and jumpers that seems to be my typical uniform but it would be a great idea to layer a vest on top!

  4. Layering is everything, especially during this time of the year haha. Or well, I do it during the summer too for some reason. Great tips 🙂

  5. I am so happy about this post. One mark of a true fashionista is the ability to mix and match pieces that aren’t necessarily bought or paired together. All the looks you gave us are fantastic and you def have mastered this art of layering.

  6. Love all your layering combinations. I love to layer because it is freezing cold in the mornings and nights here but during the day it gets hot. So I take layers off depending how warm it gets through out the day.

  7. I always layer. It is how I hide all my lumps and bumps that I haven’t had time to get to the gym to work off. I really love those floral wide leg trousers.

  8. The layered look is a fabulous look and it looks so good o n you. In particular I like the look your bring together with the tall boots and yellow plaid shirt. I also like the look you combined with the striped pink skirt. I think once you find your style niche you just perfect it. Mine is the straight dress.

  9. I love the red and the black with sneakers! It totally looks like something I would put on. I’m all about comfort so sneakers and layers are where it is at for me. Thanks for the great ideas!

  10. Layering helps so much during this time of the season! I’ve been trying to find ways to make a few of my clothes more hijab friendly, I’ll definitely try layering to accomplish that in’sha’Allah! Thanks for the tips! 😊
